Indian film actor Akshay Kumar announced on Tuesday that he once again became an Indian citizen. He gave this information on India’s Independence Day through his Twitter.
Akshay Kumar, who faced a lot of criticism regarding his Canadian citizenship, shared his citizenship certificate on Twitter. 55-year-old Akshay Kumar has also posted a message along with this announcement.
He wrote, ‘Both mind and citizenship are Hindustani. Happy Independence Day. Jai Hind.
Why did he take Canadian citizenship?
Akshay Kumar had talked about this many years ago. According to him, sometime in the 90s, his career went through a bad phase. According to a report by news agency PTI, at that time, 15 of his films were consecutive flops.
Akshay Kumar had said, ‘At that time, I had applied for Canadian citizenship in such a situation.’ After he did not vote in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, there was a big debate on social media about his citizenship.
During an event in 2019, Akshay Kumar publicly said that he had applied for an Indian passport.
Akshay Kumar said during the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit, “I never thought that I would need a document to prove that I am an Indian.”
He said, ‘After 14 films failed, I thought that I should take some other path. A close friend of mine living in Canada asked me to come there. He told us to work together on something.
He is also an Indian and is living there. I took the passport there because I thought my career here was over. But then my 15th film became a hit and I never looked back. I kept going. But I never thought that I would have to change my passport.
But after the dispute about citizenship increased, he decided to apply for an Indian passport.
Akshay said in the same program, “I have filed a petition for this because I think people have made it an issue.” I have to show my passport to prove that I am an Indian. This thing hurts me. So I don’t want to give anyone a chance to say anything. So I applied for an Indian passport.
My wife is Indian and my son is also Indian. Everyone in my family is Indian. I pay taxes to India. My life is here but some people want to convey a different message.
